Sugarloaf Sunset-080109.jpg
The Great Sugar Loaf is a mountain in the east of the Wicklow Mountains. Standing at 501 metres, it is the 460th highest summit in Ireland. It has a very distinctive shape and looks very different to the mountains that surround it. Its conical shape has led many to believe, incorrectly, that it is an extinct volcano but it is composed of Cambrian Quartzite. In appearance it resembles Croagh Patrick in County Mayo. Sitting above the village of Kilmacanogue and overlooking Dublin Bay, it is a very familiar site for Dubliners and provides a wonderful backdrop when driving along the the main Dublin to Wexford road through the Glen of the Downs.
